The American Heart Association's HeartSaver CPR, AED & First Aid course is designed for anyone with little or no medical training who wants to be prepared to respond to emergencies at home, in the workplace, or in the community. This hands-on, instructor-led course teaches the critical skills needed to recognize and respond to a variety of first aid, choking, and cardiac emergencies.

This is the essential course for lay responders, including:

  • Workplace safety personnel and designated first responders

  • Teachers, coaches, and childcare workers

  • Fitness instructors and personal trainers

  • Construction, manufacturing, and hospitality staff

What You Will Learn:
Through interactive instruction and hands-on practice, you will learn how to:

  • Act in an Emergency: How to recognize an emergency, check the scene for safety, and activate the emergency response system (call 911).

  • Provide First Aid: How to control bleeding, treat burns, manage injuries (sprains, fractures), and respond to sudden illnesses like poisoning, seizures, and shock.

  • Respond to Choking: How to perform first aid for choking in adults, children, and infants using back blows and abdominal thrusts.

  • Perform High-Quality CPR: How to perform CPR with chest compressions and rescue breaths for an adult, child, and infant who has stopped breathing.

  • Use an AED: How to safely and effectively use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on adults and children to restart a heart in sudden cardiac arrest.

  • Assess and Assist: How to check a responsive person and recognize signs of a stroke or heart attack.

Course Format & Certification:

  • Instructor-Led: Taught by certified AHA instructors who provide guidance, feedback, and real-world context.

  • Hands-On Practice: Extensive practice on manikins allows you to build muscle memory and confidence.

  • Course Completion Card: Upon successful completion, you will receive an official American Heart Association HeartSaver CPR, AED & First Aid course completion eCard, valid for two years.

Compliance Statement: California RCFE Staffing Requirements
This course (AHA Heartsaver® CPR AED & First Aid) is designed to satisfy the mandatory emergency training requirements for staff in Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) as mandated by California state law. Completion of this training ensures facility compliance with the following code sections:
  • California Health and Safety Code § 1569.618(c)(3): Satisfies the legal mandate that at least one staff member with current CPR and First Aid training is on duty and on the premises at all times.
  • Title 22, CCR § 87411(c): Fulfills the requirement that all RCFE staff who assist residents with personal activities of daily living receive appropriate training in First Aid from qualified agencies such as the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Title 22, CCR § 87415(a): Meets the specific First Aid training requirements for night supervision staff (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.), ensuring emergency readiness across all three shifts.
  • California Health and Safety Code § 1569.625: Provides foundational emergency response training that contributes toward the 40-hour initial training requirement for direct care staff.
